Weak Muscles

Last weekend I decided to dust off my bike and get some exercise

DSC02558

I'm not used to this and it was hard work. I decided to take small steps and just ride around the neighbourhood but ended up at Queen Elizabeth Park. Needless to say I had to ride up a few hills. I was huffing and puffing and so out of shape. I am so embarrased at showing off my flubber

Having a much needed rest was a necessity. I have a rule that I have to ride everywhere, I don't walk up hills, that would be cheating. If I am tired, then I will take a short break before I continue. If I can't make it all the way up a hill, I stop to rest, then pedal. I try not to walk with the bike

  1. Well maybe it hurts so much because you ARE BAREFOOT!!!! Lovely park though. And glad you got out to enjoy the day.

Maybe you're right. The pedals are serrated so runners don't slip. They cut into your foot when you put pressure on the pedals, but I wear sandals most of the time. I am working on my sandal tan

  2. Way to go Bob you've got the helmet ... but barefoot, moving wheels, spokes .... could all end up in a major Owie! Love the shadow view, it's "fearsome." (Is that even a word?)

We have a helmet law here, so I have to wear the helmet. I like the freedom of the barefootedness . . . I also hope my extremities don't get caught . I don't like owies either

I'm not sure about getting healthier. So far it is making me tired. I have to get stronger so I can catch up to you.

I once caught my foot in an accident. It pulled the nail off my toe and it hurt for a long time, but I never learn . . .

  5. Way to go, Bob. I am not a big fan of pedal bikes, but any kind of exercise is a good way to loose a few pounds and feel good.

my foot problem does not allow me to walk far. I know you like to hike great distances. The bicycle makes it easier for me to go farther. I feel better when I eat less but so far no pounds shed

  6. Good job Bob on getting out and pedaling. My bike is still hanging in the garage. Oh and I agree with the others, don't think I'd be doing it barefoot.

It is cool you found music in the park too.

I can pedal but I can't walk far, jog, or run. I know you are doing your 5K fun run today. I could only do it with my bicycle. Barefoot running is the latest health craze, you can do it !

I was riding and I heard the banjo. I like the sounds of the banjo so I headed over to listen to them

  7. I'd agree with the others on the barefoot riding. Not much different than riding a scooter or motorcycle on the street. The speeds are a lower but the asphalt is the same. Plus it limits how hard you can push on the pedals and prevents you from using toe clips.

(Just thought you needed harassing today...)

I think you're a bit envious of our warmer weather. I am trying to enjoy the last remnants of summer. It will be back to shoes and boots soon enough.

  8. Ouch on the barefoot, Bob!

I am about to get back to where there is a fabulous "rail trail" and I imagine after riding scooters for 5 years that I am also in for a "rude awakening" on the bike.

Moto is SO much easier...and more fun!

when I purchased this bike, I asked for the combo road/trail tire so the tread pattern is not that aggressive. I ride mainly on the pavement, but that rail trail sounds like a challenge. Pedal power takes much more energy than I am used to, too. I prefer something with a throttle.

  9. Bob toes need shoes when in moving things. Good for you for getting out there! I am pulling the treadmill/laundry hanger out of storage & going to get fit over the winter.

But . . . but . . . I'm not travelling very fast so it's okay. I used to do a lot of walking, but not so much with my foot being the way it is, but cycling is considered to be good for you, except it is tiring work

  10. Well done Bob, all you have to do is have a go and you feel better already dont you.

Terry and I went on a fun run/walk for charity last weekend and it felt at first that we were going to die before we saw the first km marker, but we made it eventually and both felt great while we were munching on our big breakfast and pancakes that we treated outselves to afterwards :D

good for you for registering for the charity walk. It is too ambitious for me but I could walk slowly if it wasn't too long, or perhaps I could ride my bike along the route.

I know what you mean about being out of breath while you are doing it, but once you are finished you feel like you accomplished something
